Clinton joined the Richland School District in 2015 as the Assistant Director of Financial Services. Before joining Richland, he spent 4 years as the Business Manager of the Royal School District, and most recently, another 4 years as Executive Director of Finance & Operations of the Wahluke School District, learning all the intricacies that smaller school districts have to offer. He grew up on a small farm in Eastern Washington (in the middle of nowhere) and attended Big Bend Community College and Eastern Washington University. Clinton now lives in Richland with his wife, Kelly, and their three children. While not at work, he enjoys supporting his kids in whatever they are doing and staying active.

Member Spotlight Q & A:

What is your role at Richland School District?

I normally say helpful finance guy, but officially Assistant Director of Financial Services

What brought you into school district business?

Not to sound too silly, but a desire to make a difference. Also, I was initially told I’d have summers off…

What has helped you most in your career development?

Great mentors, networking and asking questions. A lot of questions.

What do you enjoy most about your position?

Everything; I knew my first week of being in school district business that this is what I wanted to do.

What has been your proudest moment in your career?

Oddly enough I weigh everything the same. The process of incremental improvement and moving towards increased efficiency is continually rewarding.

How has your involvement as a WASBO member helped you most?

The networking and the professional development opportunities.

How do you balance work and family life?

To be honest, for a long time I didn’t. Now, when I’m with my family I try to be 100% with them. Turning off email notifications was helpful.

What do you find to be the most challenging part of your job?

Keeping my desk paper free, no matter what I seem to do more continues to appear.

What has been your favorite project?

I’ve been fortunate to be involved in some interesting and rewarding projects, no favorites though.

Do you have a favorite personal motto/mantra or philosophy?

Two actually; Carpe Diem, which I learned from a classic movie when I was 13, and “It doesn’t get any easier, you get better”.

What is something people would be surprised to learn about you?

Hmmm… lots of embarrassing things…  I was in a ballet in college. Thankfully before HD camera phones.

What are your favorite things to do when you aren’t working?

Spending time with my wife and kids is always at the top, basketball and playing guitar are my go to stress relievers.
