Retirement Certification

This new Retirement Certification is a series of four online classes.  Upon completion of all classes, you will be eligible for a Retirement CSBS certification. 

It is strongly recommended that you have completed all WASBO Payroll classes or have the equivalent of 3+ years district payroll experience to participate in these courses.

Class Descriptions:

Retirement 110

Retirement 110 provides a historical overview of the retirement plans in the State of Washington including significant dates and laws that impact membership and eligibility.  The course identifies the role and responsibility of school districts as an employer with members of the various retirement plans.  Course participants will become familiar with web-based tools and information providing them information which will assist in the monthly processing and membership eligibility.

Course participants will also be introduced to DRS governance – RCW’s and WAC’s, various communication tools, annual information and recordkeeping responsibility.  The course will cover the contents of the Employer Handbook, review school district terms as they relate to monthly processing, eligibility and membership.  There is also a review of contribution rates, forms, position eligibility and rules for retirement record retention.  The course includes unique assignments that will help the participant build their own retirement manual for use after the class specific to the course content. This course is designed for individuals seeking practical knowledge of retirement principles in Washington State School Districts.

Retirement 210

Retirement 210 covers the background of and reporting for all DRS retirement education plans including service credit, compensation and proper reporting.  Class participants will learn how to determine service credit eligibility by plan, define status and type codes as well as gain an understanding of reporting retirees and substitutes.  The course includes unique assignments that will help the participant build their own retirement manual for use after the class specific to the course content.  A final exam and research assignment are required for course completion.  This course is designed for individuals seeking practical knowledge of retirement principles in Washington State School Districts.

Retirement 310
Retirement 310 will promote the understanding of the retirement plan contributions and reporting as well as the impact to membership and eligibility.  This course will review reportable compensation, payment types, employer responsibility and the systems and plans in Washington State School Districts.  Course participants will conduct unique assignments that will help build their own retirement manual for use after the conclusion of the class specific to the course contents.  A final exam and research assignment are required for course completion.  This course is designed for individuals seeking practical knowledge of retirement principles in Washington State School Districts.

Retirement 410

Retirement 410 reviews the DRS Transmittal Edit Report and Account Activity Statements.  Course participants will understand the relationship between these reports and how to make basic corrections.  Introduced in this course are additional investment plans such as Deferred Compensation, 403(b), Roth, VEBA, HSA’s and HRA’s.  In this course, participants will also receive information on cash-outs that go to VEBA accounts and review components of new hire and employee retirement packets.  This course will also cover employer responsibilities under the IRS for plan administration and plan documents.  Participants will conduct unique assignments that will help build their own retirement manual for use after the conclusion of the class specific to the course content.  A final exam and research assignments are required for course completion.  This course is designed for individuals seeking practical knowledge of retirement principles in Washington State School Districts.
